100-Year Anniversary of the June 29, 1925
Santa Barbara Earthquake

Join Dr. Larry Gurrola and Dr. Craig Nicholson for a one-day geology field trip through the Santa Barbara Fold Belt. This trip explores the geomorphology, geologic structures, and seismic hazards that shape the region we know today, but they didn't know about 100-years ago!!

  • Transportation: from Ventura or Santa Barbra
  • Lunch: sandwiches, cold beverages, fruit, chips
  • Snacks & Refreshments
  •  Field Trip Guidebook

How to Sign Up

for this Exciting Field Trip in 4 easy steps ...
But first some things to know: (the fine print)

-- There is limited space on the trip for about 45 participates, so availability is determined by first to sign up online and getting your payment in or arranged and signing your waiver prior to the day of the trip (see the online sign-up).

-- There are limited spaces for student participation at a discount price. Availability will be determined as sign-ups progresses. If student interest is low, those spaces will be made available to non-students (and visa-versa).

-- When spaces are filled based on first-come-first-serve in the online sign-ups, a waiting list will be started based on the continued order of sign-ups.

-- A Liability Waiver and Medical Notification form is required to be completed, signed, and submitted prior to attending the field trip.

-- Transportation for the field trip will originate from Ventura and from Santa Barbara. You must indicate where you want to be picked up.

-- Time will be tight for transportation and hitting the initial stops - in part due to tides on the AM beach stops. There will be little time to accept payment and signed waivers on Saturday morning - so PLEASE complete the "4 STEPS" prior to May 3rd as best you can.

-- Making special arrangements for transport and meeting are NOT encouraged, but MAY be considered on a case by case basis.

ABOUT THE FIELD TRIP

CGS will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the June 29, 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake with a one-day field trip examining the geology along the coastline, the history of the 1925 earthquake, and what came from the aftermath to make the City of Santa Barbara we know today.

The field trip will include up to seven (7) field stops from Summerland to Santa Barbara, California. We will start with a pristine exposure the Loon Point fault-propagation fold on the beach and the eastern extent of the fault as we explore the Ortega Hill anticline on a beach walk during low tide.

As noted, we will discuss the 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake and the damage caused by the earthquake at Shoreline Park. Local accounts will be highlighted, as we follow up on what the scientific community has learned since the damaging earthquake.

We then examine the stair-stepped geomorphology of marine terraces on the Santa Barbara coastline and discuss uplift rates derived from terrace elevations. Also, view and discuss the Mission Ridge fault and uplift, locally known as the "American Riviera", and view geomorphic landforms preserved on the Mission Ridge uplift.

Lunch will be served on a late Holocene debris flow lobe and will be followed by a presentation on the structural framework of the onshore and offshore fold belt by Dr. Craig Nicholson before taking in a view of downtown Santa Barbara from an overlook for a discussion of the seismic hazards posed by the Mesa and Mission Ridge faults.

We will also discuss the shaking hazards posed by the former and post-1925 developed coastal "el estero". Lastly, we will view a ground surface warp which is suggestive of ongoing Holocene activity of the Mission Ridge-Arroyo Parida segments in Montecito.
